Green chilli prices go down as import increases

The price of green chilli has gone down exponentially in the wholesale market after import through the Hilli Land Port began.

The wholesale price of green chilli has gone down from Tk 200-220 to Tk 90-100 in the past ten days in various markets of the port.

After an import ban for 8 months, green chilli import began again on August 8 through Hili port.

Heli Land Port Import-Export Group President Harun ur Rashid said the government has decided to import green chilli from India due to its price hike in the country’s market.

“A few importers have imported green chilli so far. They are sending the products to different parts of the country,” he said.

Bablur Rahman, an importer, said the prices will go down further if the government lowers the import duty.

Montaj Ali, a seller said green chillies were being sold for Tk 120 per kg in the retail markets of Hili.

Sohrab Hossain Mallik Pratap, public relations officer of Panama Hili Port Link Limited, said green chilli is being imported via 15-25 trucks through the Hili Land Port every day.

On August 16 and 17, 165 tonnes of green chilli has been imported on 42 trucks.

Yusuf Ali, the deputy assistant officer of the plant contamination control centre of Hili land port, said the Ministry of Commerce has given import permits for green chilli to ensure adequate supply in the domestic market.
