Bumper yield of jute likely in Narail

Farmers of Narail expect a bumper yield of jute this season as the weather condition has been favourable so far.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), farmers have harvested jute from 50 per cent of the total cultivated area in Sadar Upazila, Lohagra and Kalia upazilas.

The farmers have started the rotting process to extract jute fibre from the jute sticks. They expect a hefty profit from their harvest this season.

DAE sources said in three upazilas of the district, jute cultivation has increased by 1,000 hectares more than the target. Jute has been cultivated on a total of 23,340 hectares of land in this district. Agriculture officials expect 2,68,410 bales of jute from the cultivated land.

in Narail Sadar upazila the target for cultivation has been set at 80,903 bales of jute from 7,035 hectares of land.

In Lohagra upazila the target for cultivation has been set at 1,39,782 bales of jute from 12,155 hectares of land.

In Kalia upazila, the target for cultivation has been set at 47,725 bales of jute from 4,150 hectares of land.

Deputy Director of DAE Narail, Deepak Kumar Roy said the agriculture department has field workers that provide the farmers with advice, supply of new varieties of seeds and other incentives.

Due to the good price of jute in the market, jute cultivation in the region has increased in the last few years. He said due to the increase in the demand for jute from various jute mills in Jashore and Khulna, the farmers of this region are leaning toward jute cultivation.

Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Narail DAE Nipu Majumdar said as the demand for jute fibre and jute stick is increasing day by day, the farmers of the region are leaning toward jute cultivation more.
