The price of eggs has been reduced by Tk two per piece in the markets of Gopalganjs according to the traders.
They said this is due to the market monitoring team of the district administration and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP).
On Monday, per case (30 pieces) eggs were being sold at Tk 300 in the retail market and Tk 280 in the wholesale market of the district. Last week the prices had increased by Tk 60 per case.
Trader Sanjay Sikder of Gopalganj city said, “Last week poultry farmers suddenly increased the price of eggs by Tk 340 per case and the distributors sold them to us for Tk 350. We had to increase the prices as a result causing dissatisfaction among the buyers.”
DNCRP carried out operations with the help of the district administration against the sudden price hike to keep the market stable. The mobile courts fined traders for selling eggs at a higher rate.
A buyer Rahima Begum, 58, said, “Syndicates and unscrupulous traders are stealing extra profits by increasing the prices of some products without any reason. If the government remains diligent in monitoring the market, buyers like us will benefit.”
Assistant Director of Gopalganj DNCRP, Shamim Hasan said, “We have conducted a mobile court in Gopalganj on Friday and Saturday to control the price of eggs.”
The mobile court fined 6 businesses Tk 12,000 for selling eggs at an excessive price. He added that the district administration will continue monitoring the market to ensure that the prices remain stable.
