4 to die for killing varsity student in Cox’s Bazar

A court has sentenced four accused to death and two others life-term jail in the sensational Cox’s Bazar International University student Zia Uddin Faisal murder case.

Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions judge Md Ismail pronounced the verdict around 11:30 am on Wednesday.

The death-row convicts are Rezaul Karim alias Buillyani, 20, son of Nuruschofa, Nurul Haque, 22, son of late Aman Ullah, Romjan Ali, 24, son of late Asiur Rahman and Rubel, 20, son of Md Ishak. They all were the inhabitants of Machuakhali at PeyemKhali union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila.

Those who have received life-term jail are Shahin Uddin, 19, son of Nurul Absar and Moni Alam, 19, son of Dudu Mia.

The accused were present on the dock during the pronouncement of the verdict.

PP Advocate Faridul Alam said Zia Uddin Faisal, son of Md Nurul Anwar of village Purbo Macchuakhali under PM Khali union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, and 5th semester student of the Department of Law of Cox’s Bazar International University, used to oppose and obstructed the local drug peddlers to sell drugs in his area.

Being angry, the drug peddlers launched an armed attack on Faisal on the north side of Purbo Macchuakhali Jame Mosque at 8pm on April 16, 2016. Critically injured Faisal was rushed to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead.

Later, Faisal’s father Nurul Anwar filed a murder case against nine persons under Section 302/34 of the Bangladesh Penal Code at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station. Police filed chargesheet to court accusing six persons. Following the submission of testimonies and cross-examinations, the court set Wednesday for pronouncement of the verdict.
