Onion prices go down in Dinajpur

The price of onion at Hili land port in Dinajpur has decreased by Tk 4-6 per kg as imports continue from India. Wholesalers and retailers said that the import of onions from India has increased due to the high prices of domestic onions.

Importer Sakhawat Hossain of M/s Shovan Enterprises, and Zakir Hossain of C&F agent Nirab Traders, said various varieties of Indian onions including Nasik, Indore are imported through this port. About 10-12 truckloads of onions are imported through Hili port every day.

Ferdous Rahman, a retail onion trader in Hili Bazar, said, “We buy wholesale from importers at the rate of Tk 15-18 per kg and sell them at the retail price of Tk 17-20 per kg.”

Haroon ur Rashid Haroon, president of Hili Import-Export Group, said onion import through Hili port has increased more than before. Prices will go down further if import continues.

Sohraf Hossain, public relations officer of Panama Hili Port said about 680 tonnes of onions were imported via 34 trucks on Thursday. “Panama Port Authority is providing full cooperation to importers-exporters, C&F agents and port-related parties,” he said.
