Jamalpur farmers produce over 8,000 tonnes of Aush rice

Farmers of Jamalpur district got bumper production of Aush paddy with a yield of 8,577 tonnes of rice from 3,127.2 hectares of land this year.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources said the farmers already completed harvesting of the crop on September 8.

The office said the crop has economically benefitted farmers comprehensively as they cultivated the crop expending less cost.

It said the peasants did not pay for irrigation. Besides, farmers have to use very low fertiliser as after harvesting Boro soil remained fertile.

The office said farmers got excellent production of Aush due to the implementation of an incentive programme, favourable weather and in absence of pest attacks.

Farmers cultivated Aush on 3,700 hectares of land with a production target of 10,611 tonnes of rice. But flood water damaged Aush crops on 572.8 hectares of land.

According to the DAE office, farmers cultivated three varieties of Aush paddy of which high yielding variety, high-breed variety and local variety. Farmers got high-yielding variety 8,467 tonnes of rice, high-breed 28 tonnes and local 82 tonnes of rice.

Agriculture Department distributed incentives on Aus paddy among 4,500 small and marginal farmers in all the seven upazilas of the district worth over Tk 35 lakh this Kharif-1 season.

Under the programme, each of the farmers received five kilograms high yielding variety Aus seed, 20-kilogram Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and 10-kilogram Muriate of potash (MOP) free of cost for cultivating one Bigha of land. The seeds are 2,000 kilogram BRRI-82, 14,500-kilogram BRRI-48 and 6,000 kilogram BINA-19.

The benefited farmers are 1,000 in Jamalpur Sadar upazila, 470 in Sarishabari, 590 in Melandaha, 730 in Islampur, 450 in Madarganj, 680 in Dewanganj and 580 in Bakshiganj upazila.

Deputy Director, DAE, Zakia Sultana said farmers got a good yield of Aush paddy as the government is implementing various programmes to increase Aush production.
