Newborn among 3 killed in road crash

At least three people including a newborn baby were killed and five others injured in a road accident on Rangpur–Dinajpur regional highway in a bus ambulance collision on Sunday around 9:00am.

The deceased were identified as ambulance driver Al Amin, 30, Rafiqul Islam, 40, resident of Nilphamari, and a seven days old newborn baby.

The accident occurred when a passenger bus of Bhai Bhai Express collided head-on with an ambulance coming from the opposite directions near Saleyasha Bazar adjacent to Kharubhaj Bridge in Taragonj upazilla, police said.

On information, police and firefighters reached the spot and rescued the injured and rushed them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH).

The on-duty physician at the RpMCH emergency ward, Shafiul Alam declared three of them dead on arrival. Two other critically injured are currently undergoing treatment.

The officer in charge of Taragonj Highway Police, Sheikh Mohammad Mahabub Morshed said the bodies are kept in the morgue and they have seized the two vehicles.

Two killed in Chandpur road accident

A man and his eight-month pregnant wife were killed in a collision between a speeding truck and a CNG-run-auto-rickshaw in Chandpur’s Kachua upazila of the district on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Waz Uddin, 30, and his wife Sabikun Nahar, 24 - residents of Baraiara village under Sarchar union in the upazila.

Ibrahim Khalil, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kachua police station, said the accident occurred around 2pm when the goods-laden speeding truck rammed into the auto-rickshaw carrying the couple from the opposite direction, leaving the duo critically injured.

They were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared them dead on arrival, he said.

The couple met the tragic end on their way home after a doctor’s visit on the Kachua-Sachar-Dhaka road in the Hatmuda area, the OC said.

Though the truck was seized, its driver managed to flee the spot, the police officer said.

Sachar Union Parishad Chairman Ali Akkas Molla said the number of such accidents on the busy road is increasing alarmingly claiming lives and properties day by day.

Immediate measures should be taken to lessen such accidents, he added.
