Kurigram district administration pays tribute to Syed Shamsul Haq – Molla Harun ur Rashid

The 6th death anniversary of writer Syed Shamsul Haq was observed in Kurigram on Tuesday. People from all walks of life paid their respects at the grave of the poet.

Independence Award-winning poet, playwright, fiction writer and translator Syed Shamsul Haq died on September 27, 2016. The district administration paid their respect by laying a flower wraith on his gravestone on the Kurigram Government College grounds at around 10am Tuesday morning.

Additional District Commissioner Md Minhajul Islam, Superintendent of Police Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam, Principal of Kurigram Government College Md Mirza Nasir Uddin, Ekushey Medal Awardee Advocate Abraham Lincoln, Convener of District Combined Cultural Alliance Shyamal Bhowmik among others were present during the procession.

Syed Shamsul Haq was born in Kurigram on December 27, 1935, to Syed Siddique Hussain and Halima Khatun. He started writing at an early age and penned over 200 poems in his teen years.

He penned several collections of poems, including Ekoda Ek Rajye, Biratihin Utsab, Baishakhe Rachita Pangktimala, Pratidhwanigan, Apar Purush, Paraner Gahin Bhitar, Agni o Joler Kabita, Rajjupathe Cholechhi, Nabhimule Bhasmadhar, Bejan Shaharer Janya Chorus, Ek Ashcharja Sangamer Smriti, Muktijuddher Kabita, Kabita Samagra in three volumes and others.

Syed Shamsul Haq created a new trend in contemporary Bangla drama. He penned popular verse plays, namely Payer Awaj Paoa Jay, Nuruldiner Sara Jiban, Ekhane Ekhon, Irsha, Narigan, Banglar Mati Banglar Jal and others.

He wrote many screenplays for mainstream films and hundreds of playback songs, including Hayre manush rangin phanush, Tumi asbe bole kachhe dakbe bole and others.
