Karupannya Rangpur Ltd, a factory producing hand-made rugs called Shatranji, has become a global brand exporting the colourful product to 72 countries.
At present, the annual turnover of the company, founded by a couple Shafiqul Alam Selim and Shurufa Hossain Shila, is around Tk 304.35 crore.
The traditional artistic fabric Satranji was recognised as a Geographical Indication [GI] product of Bangladesh in 2021.
Karupannya, a member of BGMEA, manufactures 60 varieties of rugs by recycling waste from garment and textile sectors and using jute, yarn, rope, and straw. The company has five factories at Robertsonganj, Lahirirhat, Padaganj and Pirgacha in Rangpur and Ulipur in Kurigram district.
Mahabub Rhaman Habu, the public relation advisor of Karupannya, told The Business Post, “The country witnessed tremendous growth in rug export after Karupannya got access to the European countries. The company has received the gold medal of the National Export Trophy several times awarded by the commerce ministry.”
“The company has now two outlets in Rangpur and one outlet in the Sukrabad area in Dhaka. Around 7000 employees and workers are working in the five factories of the company,” he added.
Mahabub Rhaman said the main unit of the company is located in the Robertsonganj area of Rangpur city where around 5,000 workers and employees are engaged.
The unit is 100 per cent export-oriented where full-time production runs round the clock. Workers in the factory work three shifts a day. Around 90 per cent of the workers are women. The factory has a day-care centre for the children of female workers.
