Farmers of Jamalpur have produced 3,16,626 bales of jute fibre in the district this year. The farmers are also benefiting from the reasonable price of jute fibre in local markets.

Sources said per maund jute fibre was sold Tk 2500 to 3000 from the very beginning of harvesting.

Farmer Md Abdul Wadud at village Sapdhari in Islampur Upazila said he cultivated Tosha variety jute on three Bighas of land and got bumper yield due to the short duration of the flood, availability of fertiliser and the co-operation of the agriculture department.

He said he got 14 maunds of jute fibre from one bigha of land and also got Tk 7,000 by selling jute sticks.

According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources, farmers brought 28,933 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the district this year. But a recent flood damaged 2,708 hectares of land.
