Cumilla farmers happy with bumper radish harvest

White radish farmers of the char areas of Cumilla are currently busy harvesting their bumper production of the vegetable.

The districts’ Adarsha Sadar and Burichang upazila by the banks of the Gomti River has seen a bumper crop of white radish this season, making the farmers happy.

After picking the vegetables they clean and bundle them up to be sold to the wholesalers. The wholesalers buy them from the farmers and load them onto trucks to transport them to different districts.

Radish farmer Fajar Ali of Sholanal union of Burichang upazila said he cultivated radish on 35 decimals of land this year and has spent around Tk 30,000 on seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and labour costs.

“I sold my harvest for Tk 75,000. I am really happy to have made such a huge profit in only one month,” he said.

Zahid Hossain, a wholesale vegetable trader in Chattogram buys white radish from char areas of Cumilla. This season he bought radish worth Tk 70,000 and spent Tk 10,000 on transportation and labour. The trader expects to sell the vegetables for Tk 1.2 lakh. According to Zahid, radish is in high demand in Chattogram.
