Six killed in Tangail road crash

At least six people including a child were killed and 20 others injured in a road accident at the roundabout east of Bangabandhu Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the district Thursday afternoon, police said.

The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Ekota Paribahan lost control and collided with a microbus coming from the opposite direction at around 1:15pm.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, police said.

The accident left four dead on spot. The injured were taken to Tangail General Hospital where two others succumbed to their injuries.

Ataur Rahman, station officer in charge of Elenga Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the injured were rescued after half an hour of effort.

Tangail District Commissioner Dr Md Ataul Gani, District Superintendent of Police Sarkar Mohammad Qaiser and Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mst Ishrat Jahan visited the scene on receiving the news of the accident.

During the visit, DC Ataul Gani said the families of the deceased will be paid Tk 20,000 and the government will bear all the medical expenses of the injured.

Bangabandhu Setu East Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Shafiqur Rahman said, “The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after identifying them.”
