Four people, including a policeman, were killed and 10 others injured when a speeding passenger bus crashed into a roadside tree in the Chandradighalia area on the Dhaka-Khulna highway under Sadar upazila of Gopalganj district Friday morning.
The deceased policeman was identified as Barishal Metropolitan Police member Abdul Alim, 25, while the identities of the other victims could not be known immediately, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar police station Sheikh Nasir Uddin said.
Alim was deployed to ensure security during the visit of the President and the Prime Minister to Gopalganj on Friday, he said.
According to the OC, the accident occurred when the driver of the Mongla-bound bus of Didar Paribahan from Chattogram crashed into the roadside tree in the area around 5.30am as its driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving four people dead on the spot and 10 others injured. The injured were admitted to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, the OC added.
Of the injured, two people were transferred to Khulna General Hospital as their condition was serious, said Md Faruq Ahmed, resident medical officer of the hospital.
