7 to die for killing AL leader in Mymensingh

A special court in Dhaka on Monday convicted and sentenced seven people to death and three others to life imprisonment over the murder of Mymensingh’s Gouripur upazilla Awami Swechchhasebak League general secretary Masudur Rahman Shuvro in 2020.

Judge Monir Kamal of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 pronounced the judgment this morning, also acquitting nine others of the charges.

Convicts, who have been sentenced to death are- upazilla BNP leader and Moilakanda union chairman Riad Uzzaman Riad, Gouripur upazilla BNP leader Sakib Ahmed Reza, Swechchhasebak Dal leader Mozammel Haque, Khairul Islam, Main Uddin, Ruhul Amin and Shariful Islam Nayeem.

The court sentenced Masud Pervej Karjon, Shariatullah alias Sumon and Russel Miah to life imprisonment. They have also been fined Tk 20,000 each.

The fast-track court on October 6 had fixed October 10 to pronounce the judgment as the closing arguments in the case concluded on that day. Judge Monir Kamal of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict.

Shuvro was hacked to death in the Pan Mohal area of Gouripur on October 17, 2020. The victim’s younger brother Abidur Rahman Pranto filed the case with Gouripur Police Station.

On April 27, 2021, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) Shah Kamal Akanda submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 19 people for the killing.

On January 26, 2022, the court framed charges against the accused and started the trial process. During the trial, the court collected testimonies from a total of 17 witnesses while nine people bore witness to the accused.

On October 6, 2022, the court set today for pronouncing the verdict after completion of arguments from the prosecution and the defendant.
