Onion prices increase in Hili

Within a week onion prices have increased by Tk 8-10 per kg in Hili, Dinajpur.

Last week onion was being sold at Tk 20-22 per kg. However, on Thursday the prices went up to Tk 28-30 per kg.

According to the traders the supply of onions in the market has reduced due to low imports which led to increased prices.

A buyer Ayez Uddin, expressing his dissatisfaction with the sudden price increase said, last week he bought onions at Tk 20 per kg but on Thursday he had to buy them for Tk 30.

Retail onion seller Ripon Mia said, “Traders are not importing onion as much so the supply has decreased leading to the sudden price hike.”

Ferdous Rahman, a wholesale onion seller, said that currently Indian onions are being sold at a wholesale rate of Tk 26-27 per kg. He added that prices will go down again after import increases again.

Harun-ur-Rashid, President of Hili Land Port Import-Export Group, said, “Onion prices are high in India. Importers are imported less onion due to that, as well as due to the increase in dollar price.

Meanwhile, Hili Customs sources informed that 17 Indian trucks full of 408 tonnes of onions were imported through the port on Wednesday.

Sohrab Hossain, public relations officer of Panama Hili Port Link Limited, said onion is regularly being imported through the port as usual.
