Five lightning victims’ families get financial aid in Gaibandha

The families of five persons, who were killed by a lightning strike in the Gaibandha, received financial aid on Thursday.

The financial aid was distributed among the lightning victims’ families by the Sadullapur upazila administration.

Sources said five workers were working in a brick kiln located at the Sholagari BTC area under the Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district on Tuesday. In the meantime, it was drizzling with thunderbolts. Then, the workers took shelter in a tin shed room in fear of thunderbolts. At one stage, a thunderbolt struck them causing them to die on the spot.

The deceased are the inhabitants of Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha district. Then, the district administration informed the higher authorities concerned about the tragic death of the workers.

In response, the ministry of disaster management and relief sanctioned Tk one lakh for the deceased.

Accordingly, the Sadullapur upazila administration led by UNO Rokhsana Begum formally distributed the financial aid to the close relatives of the deceased in a function held at her office on Thursday.

Each of them got Tk 20,000 from the administration.

Upazila project implementation officer Rezaul Karim and other officials were also present on the occasion.

Lightning strikes in Bangladesh

Lightning strikes have become one of the deadliest natural disasters in Bangladesh, claiming over 200 lives on average every year - more than by floods, cyclones and other calamities.

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, some 2,164 people died in lightning strikes in the country from 2011 to 2020. The number of deaths in 2021 was 362.

About 216 people die every year on average from lightning strikes -more than in floods, cyclones and other calamities. Farmers working out in their fields are the most frequent victims.
