Rice now available via 25 OMS outlets in Gaibandha

The government is selling rice and flour under its Open Market Sale (OMS) programme to poor people through 25 outlets in the district.

The objective of the programme is to help feed the poor at a lower price and arrest the price hike of rice, official sources said. The Food Department has set up a total of 25 sale centres from where 25 tonnes of coarse rice is being sold every day, sources said adding that flour is being sold at 9 outlets located in Sadar upazila headquarters.

Each of the consumers would be able to buy five kg of rice at Tk 30 per kg and five kg of flour at Tk 18 per kg daily from the sale centre. Every day, many poor men and women are purchasing coarse rice from the outlet standing in long queues.

The district controller (DC) of food Antara Mollik said the programme would continue until getting further order from the government. In reply to a query, the DC of food said the price of both rice and flour is now on the downtrend here.
