A cotton mill and two godowns of Ma Garments in BSCIC Industrial Area of Kurigram were gutted in a fire Sunday morning.
On receiving information, four units of the fire service of Kurigram, Ulipur, Rajarhat and Lalmonirhat were able to bring the fire under control after two hours of effort.
However, the cause of the fire is yet to be identified.
According to sources, locals noticed the fire around 10 am and informed the fire service. The mill workers failed to extinguish the fire that started from the cotton mill machine.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rashedul Hasan, Kurigram BSCIC Additional Director (AD) Jahangir Alam, and Rangpur Divisional Fire Service Deputy Director Md Jaseem Uddin visited the scene.
UNO Rashedul Hasan said efforts are underway to measure the amount of damage caused by the fire adding that the mill’s owner Mohsin Ali is currently abroad on pilgrimage. The higher officials will be informed of the extent of the damage as soon as possible.
Md Jasim Uddin, Rangpur Divisional Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense, said after receiving the information, four units of the fire service came and brought the fire under control.
“We prioritised getting the fire under control as soon as possible since there are other mills in this area. An investigation is underway to determine the amount of damage,” he said.
AD Jahangir Alam said the fire service was informed as soon as the fire broke out. Further measures will be taken after the damage report is received.
