Bhola District Disaster Management Committee in a meeting on Sunday revealed that 746 shelters have been prepared in the district to deal
with Cyclone Sitrang along with 13,600 field volunteers to help with the evacuation.
One medical team has been formed in each of the 70 unions and seven upazilas of the district. Eight control rooms have been opened. At the same time instructions have been given to keep around 1,306 educational institutions ready to be used as temporary shelters.
Bhola Deputy Commissioner Md Taufiq-e-Lahi Chowdhury gave this information during the meeting.
The District Commissioner said that all kinds of preparations have been taken by the district administration in order to tackle the situation. Officials and employees of government offices have been ordered to stay at work.
Preparations are underway to bring the residents of isolated char areas of the district to safe shelter. Packets of dry food are being prepared for people staying in shelters during disasters.
Bhola Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md Hasanuzzaman said they have 300 km of flood control embankments in the district.
The vulnerable areas of the embankments have already been repaired. Officials have been sent to different
points so that any embankment damaged by the cyclone can be repaired immediately.
District Superintendent of Police Mo Saiful Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Vivek Sarkar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Tamim Al Yamin, President of Bhola Press Club M Habibur Rahman, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Touhidul Islam, Awami League General Secretary Nazrul Islam Goldar, District Relief Officer Md Delowar Hossain and others also addressed the meeting.
