Cyclone Sitrang left extensive damage in its wake all across the country, killing many and destroying houses and property.

In Bagerhat, during the storm, a cement raw material-carrying cargo ship MV Poush-Phalguner Pala sank in Mongla upazila near the Laudob area of Pasur River Monday night. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation's (BIWTC) pontoon boat also sank in the Bangabandhu Mongla-Ghashiakhali international channel at the same time.

Md Anisuzzaman Rocky, an assistant engineer of the dredging branch of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said the sunken vessels will not hamper boat movement through the channel. He added that efforts are ongoing to recover the sunken vessel.

Mongla Port Authority Secretary (Board and Public Relations Department) Kalachand Singh said the cargo sank outside the main channel adding that other vessels can pass through without a hitch, however, the owner has been instructed to recover the cargo quickly.

He added that loading and unloading and transportation of goods of all foreign ships will start at Mongla port from noon on Tuesday if the weather is favourable.

Meanwhile, about 2,000 shrimp enclosure owners in different areas of the upazila have been more or less damaged by the storm. Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam said they are looking into the extent of the damage.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md Zafar Rana said about 350 houses in various areas of Mongla were completely and partially damaged in the storm.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamlesh Majumder said a list is being prepared to be sent to the Deputy Commissioner so that the people affected by the cyclone can get all kinds of assistance.

In Cumilla, three members of a family were killed after a tree fell on them during the storm in Nangalkot upazila of the district, UNO Md Raihan Mehbub confirmed.

The deceased were identified as Nizam Uddin, 28, his wife Sathi Akhter, 24, and daughter Liza, 4.

The UNO said the tree fell on a house at Hesakhal village of the upazila around 9pm, leaving the three members of the house seriously injured.

The injured were taken to the upazila health complex where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

In Gopalganj, two women died after trees fell on them in separate villages of Tungipara upazila here last night during the storm, caused by cyclone Sitrang.

The deceased were identified as Sharmin Begum, 25, of Pach Kahonia village and Ramecha Begum, 65, a resident of Bashbaria village of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tungipara Police Station Abul Monsur said a tree fell on Sharmin when she was working at her house during the storm that triggered heavy rainfall in different parts of the country. She died on the spot.

Similarly, a tree fell on Ramecha Begum while she was asleep at her house. Ramacha also died on the spot, the OC said.

In Bhola, Three people were killed as trees fell on them during the cyclonic storm in Daulatkhan and Charfesson upazilas of the district.

The deceased were identified as Bibi Khateja, 80, wife of late Golam Mostafa, resident of Ward No 7 of Daulatkhan Municipality, Monir Swarnkar, 35, resident of Hazariganj union of Charfesson upazila and  Mofizul Haque, 65, resident of Donia union in Sadar upazila of the district, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer SM Delwar Hossain said.

UNO of Charfesson Al Noman said a branch of a tree fell on Monir around 9 pm when he was returning home from riding on a motorcycle, leaving him critically injured.

He was taken to Charfesson Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the UNO added.

On the other hand, Bibi Khateja was also injured as another tree fell on her house during the storm around 8 pm, local sources said.
