A transport strike has been called in Rangpur district demanding the stopping of illegal vehicles on the highway and protesting administrative harassment on the Rangpur-Kurigram road.
The district Motor Owners Association called the strike on Friday and Saturday. Buses, mini-buses, microbuses, and trucks will stay suspended during the period.
The association president Mozammel Haque confirmed the matter.
He said the decision was taken in a joint urgent meeting of the leaders of the district Motor Owners Association; Truck Owners Association; and Car-Microbus Owners Association on Wednesday night.
BNP, however, condemned the transport owners for the decision of calling the transport strike on the day of its rally.
The party had called a rally in Rangpur on Friday as part of its mass rally at divisional cities seeking the party chief Khaleda Zia’s unconditional release, election-time non-party impartial government, and protesting fuel prices hike, deaths of leaders and activists by police, attack and false cases against them.
