After 29 years of Sultan Uddin murder case in Sreepur of Gazipur, two of his brothers have been sentenced to imprisonment until death and five others sentenced to life imprisonment.
Those sentenced to imprisonment until death have also been fined Tk 10,000 each.
Judge Bahauddin Kazi of Gazipur Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 Court gave the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The deceased Sultan Uddin is the son of Dhanai Bepari of Beraiderchala area of Sreepur.
Those sentenced to imprisonment until death are Sultan Uddin’s two brothers- Main Uddin, 65, and Abul Kasem Bepari, 60.
The life sentences are Dulal Uddin, 50, son of local Abdul Kadir, Abdul Mannan, 55, son of Dhanai Bepari, Main Uddin, 60, son of Sona Ullah of Beltali area and son of Shukkur Ali of the same area. Azizul Haque, 60. An accused named Gias Uddin (60) has been acquitted.
Mostafizur Rahman Bahadur, the son of the deceased and the plaintiff’s lawyer, said that there had been a dispute between Sultan Uddin and the defendants for a long time. On September 15, 1993, Sultan Uddin, his brother Motahar Hossain and neighbour Mujibur Rahman were sitting in the western room of their homestead discussing family matters.
Later, the accused entered through the open door of the house along with some others with firearms and indigenous weapons. At one stage, Sultan Uddin was caught and killed on the spot by hacking and shooting with sharp weapons in the chest and various parts of the body.
His two sons Sultan Mubarak Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad were injured with sharp weapons when they tried to protect their father. Later, when the neighbours came forward with their screams, the accused fled while firing the weapons. The next day Sultan’s brother. Motahar Hossain filed a case at Sreepur police station as the plaintiff.
In 1997, the trial of this case began in Gazipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court. After a long hearing and taking the testimony of 14 witnesses, the judge of the court gave the verdict in the presence of the defendants on Monday.
Lawyer Mostafizur Rahman Bahadur, son of the victim, said, “I was 6 years old when my father was killed. I grew up to be a lawyer to ensure justice for my father’s murder.”
He added after the verdict was announced that even after 29 years, being able to ensure justice for his father’s murder is a great achievement.
