Bus driver jailed for 5 yrs over attempt to rape on running bus

A driver has been jailed for five years for attempting to violate a college student on his running bus in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila.

District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jakir Hossain pronounced the judgement on Thursday.

The Judge also fined convict Shahid Miah Tk 50,000 and acquitted bus helper Rashid Miah.

According to the case statement, the victim college gilr was heading towards Dirai from Sylhet’s Lamakaji by a bus on December 26, 2020. When the bus reached Dirai municipality, she was alone inside the bus as all the passengers got down from the vehicle. Then the bus driver and his assistant tried to rape the girl. To save her from the rapists, the victim girl jumped from the running bus and injured seriously.

Local people, however, rescued her and took her to Dirai Hospital. Later, she was shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

The victim’s father filed a case the same day against bus driver Shahid and helper Rashid.

The girl gave her statement under section 22.
