RCC elevates dilapidated road to a smart street

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has been elevating a dilapidated road into a smart street aimed at meeting the existing demand of the city dwellers besides making the metropolis free from traffic congestion.

The 4.17-kilometre road from Naodapara bus terminal to Bhadra Railway crossing is being elevated as part of the implementation of the Tk 2,993-crore project titled Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development in Rajshahi City.

RCC Chief Engineer Nur Islam said the potential road is being elevated to four lanes from a double lane with additional two other lanes for slow-moving vehicles, a road divider and drain and footpaths on both sides at a cost of around Tk 69.78 crore.

In addition to the elevation works the north-south connecting road will be beautified and greened by transplanting decorative trees and plants.

As a whole, the road will bring an epoch-making change to people residing adjacent to the road in terms of uplifting their socio-economic situation.

Engineer Islam said they are also implementing massive infrastructural development works aimed at making the city more clean, green as well as habitable amid the competent leadership of Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.

They are going to construct five more flyovers with the main thrust of the overall development of the metropolis by freeing it from traffic congestion.

In addition to the flyovers, various development works are being implemented under the project scheduled to be completed by June 2024.

A total of ten foot-over bridges will also be constructed. Liton said Sheikh Russel Shishu Park is being established in the Chhotobangram area at a cost of around Tk 4.43 crore.

Engineer Nur Islam, who is also the director of the integrated urban infrastructure development project, said the Rajshahi city will get a new look upon its successful implementation.

“We are working relentlessly to make the city green and habitable,” he said, adding that they have adopted three more uplift projects amounting to Tk 2,705.08 crore for infrastructural development.

The burial plaque of Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman, one of the four national leaders, will be built in the Kadirganj area in the city for facilitating the scope to know about the life, works and devotion of the national leader.

The city corporation has planned to conserve 22 natural water bodies under a project titled “Natural Water Bodies Conservation and Development in Rajshahi City” to retain its surface water resources for protecting the environment from further degradation.

“We have also adopted a project styled “Modernization of Rajshahi city’s Waste Management” involving around Tk 1,465.18 crore,” Islam said.

The scheme has provisions for waste collection and removal in modern ways, construction of wastewater treatment plants, faecal sludge treatment and recycling plants. Utmost emphasis has been given to the successful implementation of all the development projects so that the city dwellers can derive total benefits from those.
