A court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for not paying of Tk 1 lakh as dowry in Dhap Mohammadpur Atiyatari area of Rangpur city five years ago.
Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 of Rangpur Mustafa Kamal handed down the sentence in his courtroom in presence of the convict.
The court also fined the convict Tk 1lakh.
The convict is Sohel Rana alias Shariful, 32, son of late Ahed Ali of Dhap Mohammadpur Atiyatari area in Rangpur city.
Prosecution says Sohel Rana and Sultana Parveen, daughter of Suja Mian of the same area got married with consent of their respective families following love affairs in 2015.
Husband Sohel Rana often demanded a dowry of Tk 1lakh from his wife.
As Sultana’s poor father could not pay the money, Sohel Rana tortured her frequently.
On June 28, 2017, Sohel Rana beat her again demanding dowry.
Later, late at night, he woke up his wife Sultana Parveen, took her outside, brutally strangled her to death and left the body in a nearby jute field outside the house.
The victim’s father Suja Mian filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police in this connection accusing Sohel Rana and his eight family members.
When the police arrested Sohel Rana, he gave a confessional statement to the magistrate in the court under section 164.
After the investigation, SI Mohibul Islam of Kotwali Police Station submitted a charge sheet against only Sohel Rana to the court.
After the testimony and cross-examination of 15 witnesses in the case, the court found Sohel Rana guilty beyond any doubt and announced the verdict ordering to hang him till death.
