Five killed as van ploughs into restaurant

Five people, including a father and son, were killed and three others injured when a covered van lost control and ploughed into a roadside restaurant on the Jashore-Monirampur highway in the Bagaritola area under Monirampur upazila of the district on Friday.

Two of the deceased were identified as Habibur Rahman, 45, and his son Tawshid Hossain, 7, resident of the Tuniaghar-Bagaritola area of the upazila. The identity of the other three could not be known immediately.

Monirampur thana officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Moniruzzaman said the accident occurred when a Satkhira-bound covered van lost control of his steering and ploughed into a roadside restaurant in the area at about 7.30am. All five victims, who were having breakfast at the restaurant, died on the spot and three others were injured.

The bodies were recovered and sent to Jashore 250-bed Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police seized the covered van but its driver managed to flee. A case was filed with Monirampur thana in this connection.
