The 31st International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the National Disabled Day 2022 was observed across the country on Saturday in a befitting manner through various programmes.
This year the day’s theme is ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world.’
In Kurigram, the day was celebrated with colourful rallies, discussions, distribution of cash and aid. On Saturday morning, a colourful procession circled the road from the District Commissioner’s office premises. Later, a discussion meeting was held in the Swapnakurdi auditorium of the DC office.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Minhajul Islam presided over the function and Deputy Commissioner Md Rezaul Karim, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ruhul Amin, Municipal Mayor Md Kaziul Islam and Deputy Director of District Social Services Department Md Rokonul Islam and Suvarna citizen Afroza Begum were present as guests.
On the occasion, 15 disabled people were given wheelchairs and 12 people were given cash.
In Bhola, marking the day, a discussion meeting, wheelchair distribution and cultural programmes were held at the district Children’s Disabilities Center this morning at the initiative of the District Administration and Social Services Department.
Deputy Director of the Local Government Department Bivek Sarkar was present as the chief guest with Assistant Director of the District Social Services Department Kazi Golam Kabir in the chair.
The speakers said that persons with disabilities would have to be developed as worthy citizens of the country by providing them with all facilities including healthcare, education and employment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, Sadar Upazila Parishad Vice-Chairman Md Yunus and freedom fighter Anwar Hossain, among others, spoke at the function.
On the occasion of Disabilities Day, the guests handed over the wheelchairs among the 40 disabled people.
In Khulna, a discussion ceremony was organised jointly by the District Administration and the Department of Social Welfare. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Mukul Kumar Maitra chaired the discussion.
Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque spoke on the occasion as the chief guest. He said physically challenged men will be made resources as well to contribute to national development by imparting proper nursing, education and training.
“Disabled people are an integral part of society. There is no scope to ignore them. We should help in flourishing their hidden talents. They will march forward defying all barriers,” he said while speaking at a discussion as chief guest at Shilpokola Academy premises marking the day.
The chief guest also said the government has been providing various facilities to disabled people through the Department of Social Welfare side by side the government is very cordial to attach them in the mainstream development process of society.
Referring to Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been working tirelessly for the development of the physically challenged people, the Mayor said urging all walks of life, and national and international voluntary organisations to come forward for their development side by side with the government.
Director of the divisional social welfare department Md Abdur Rahman, District Livestock officer Dr Arun Kanti Mondal and Freedom Fighter Md Alamgir Kabir addressed as special guests while Deputy Director of the district social welfare department Khan Motahar Hossain delivered the welcome speech.
Assistant professor of the Development Studies Discipline of the Khulna University Bayezid Khan presented the keynote paper.
In his welcome speech, Khan Motahar Hossain said the government has been implementing 54 social safety net programmes through the department of social welfare.
A total of 104 Disable Service and Aid Centers have been providing services for ensuring the safety net of disabled men including physiotherapy, he said, adding that Khulna Social Welfare Office has been ensuring the safety net to reach ‘Suborna National Identification Card (NID) among 48,144 disabled people.
