Forging social resistance stressed against drug addiction

Forging social resistance against addiction and abuse of drugs along with its illicit trafficking and trading can be the crucial means of protecting the young generation, particularly students, from drug addiction.

Simultaneously, concerted efforts of all the government and non-government entities concerned and the community has become crucial to ensure a drug abuse-free society to attain the cherished goal.

The observation came at a seminar titled “Youth Society is on the face of threat: Drug-addiction nature in College and University and Way Forward” in Rajshahi on Sunday.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) and Rajshahi College jointly organised the seminar in association with the Directorate of Narcotics Control (DNC) at the Rajshahi College auditorium in the city.

RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique addressed the meeting as chief, while Rajshahi College Principal Prof Abdul Khaleque was in the chair.

DNC Additional Director Fazlur Rahman and Rajshahi College Vice-principal Prof Waliur Rahman also spoke. Assistant Prof Sayeda Zannatun Saima talked about the negative impacts of drug addiction during her keynote presentation.

RMP Commissioner Kalam Siddique said all the local government institutions side by side with the public and private bodies should come forward and work together to attain the cherished result in this regard as the drug-abusing situation is gradually aggravating.

He said the present government has a declaration of zero tolerance against drug addiction and urged all quarters to come forward to protect the young generation from the grip of social crime.

“We have to build a healthy society to achieve sustainable development goals,” he said, adding the movement against drug abuse should be turned into social action.

Kalam Siddique said full-length support of the community in general and leaders of influence in particular can be the effective means of freeing society from the abuse of drugs along with its illicit trade and trafficking.

The creation of mass awareness about the curse of drug abuse coupled with its fatal consequences has become crucial to mitigate social disease.
