People from all walks of life celebrated Chapainawabganj Free Day on Thursday morning amid much enthusiasm and in a befitting manner.

On December 15, Chapainawabganj was freed from the grasp of Pakistani occupation army, Razakars, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams in 1971. The Mitro Bahini (Bengali resistance army) and The Mukti Bahini comprising valiant freedom fighters including Bir Shreshtho Captain Md Mohiudddin Jahangir, Golam Nabi Satu, fought fiercely to free the bordering northwestern district.

During the 1971’s War of Liberation, the district was under Sector 7 which was led by the then Major Quazi Nooruzzaman and Major Nazmul Haque.

Two Sub Sectors -- Mehdipur and Doldoli -- of Sector 7 fell in the Chapainawabganj region. Bir Shreshtho Jahangir jointly with Subedar Iliyas led Mehdipur while Lieutenant Rafiq led Doldoli.

The heat of the war reached Chapainawabganj on April 19 in 1971, when Pakistani forces detonated bombs and launched barbaric attacks in all across the district.

At that time many went to India to acquire war training and especially when the war was coming to an end many embraced martyrdom in different battlefronts.

On November 7, Lt Rafiq with fellow freedom fighters launched a sudden attack at the enemy bases in Makrampur and Ali Nagar, where 5 enemy troops were killed and the rest had escaped crossing the Mahananda River.

On December 10, freedom fighters from Char Bagdanga camp made moves to conquer Chapainawabganj town and seized an enemy bunker there.

Fierce battle broke out that afternoon as Lt Rafiqul, Maj Gheyasuddin Chowdhury and Lt A Qayyum Khan, with their men attacked Pakistani forces and got rid of them in the early hours of December 15.

The day was celebrated through various programmes including placing wreaths at Bangabandhu’s portrait, rally and discussion.

Among others, Freedom Fighter Abdur Rahman, MP Ferdousi Islam Jesi, Deputy Commissioner AKM Galiv Khan placed wreaths at the liberation war memorial at the district administration’s office premises on Thursday morning.
