Cumilla district’s winter clothes markets are attracting a lot of crowds as winter sets in properly.
Traders have stocked their shops with winter clothes of various colours and styles appropriate for the season. The markets are abuzz with buyers of all ages.
The prices of winter clothes were relatively low in autumn, however, they are currently on the rise as demand increases.
The streets of the city are lined with hawkers selling warm clothes at a cheaper rate. The street shops sell both new and second-hand clothes.
From the Racecourse area to Kandirpar, sellers line up with their carts full of winter clothes along the roadside. They sell pants, jackets, mufflers, gloves, socks, hats and blankets of various types and prices. From the street shops of the city to the big shopping malls, buyers of all ages and social classes are gathering to buy winter clothes.
Omar Faruk, the manager of Easter Yakub Plaza in the Racecourse area said they are giving a discount on hoodies as it is currently the most sought-after winter clothing.
“We start stocking up on winter clothes from the first week of October. The number of buyers has increased in the last few days as the weather got colder,” he said, adding that they sell about Tk 25,000-30,000 worth of clothes on average per day.
Taspriya, a student of Comilla Victoria College, came to the hat-sock shop after shopping for winter clothes in the market. “I bought winter clothes for my brothers and sisters and myself. They are relatively low priced at the street shops, but the shopping malls provide better quality.”
A shop assistant at Khondokar Mansion market, Monir Hossain said clothes starting from Tk 300 and up to Tk 10,000 are available at their shop. Kamrul Islam, a street vendor in Cumilla Hawkers Market, sells mufflers, gloves and socks for Tk 30-50. He said his customers are mostly low-income people from many areas of the city.
