Celebrated writer, novelist, playwright and poet Syed Shamsul Haq was remembered at his 87th birth anniversary in Kurigram on Tuesday.
Locals, cultural activists and various organisations brought out a procession and placed wreaths at the grave of the writer in the morning.
Born on December 27, 1935, in Kurigram, Syed Haq became one of the most profound litterateurs in Bangladesh. His poems are unpretentious and draw in readers easily. He wrote poetry, fiction, plays (mostly in verse), and essays for Bengali literature. His literary works are included in the curriculum of the primary school level, secondary, higher secondary and graduation levels in the country.
The poet was honoured with the Bangla Academy Award, Swadhinata Padak, Ekushey Padak, Adamjee Literary Award, Padabali Kobita Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award and many other honours. He died of lung cancer at the age of 80 in Dhaka on September 27, 2016.
