Mustard cultivation target exceeds in Jashore region

Mustard growers and agricultural experts are expecting bumper mustard production in six south-western districts under Jashore region of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) as the crop's fixed farming target has been exceeded during the current Robi season.

The six districts are- Jashore, Jhenidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga and Meherpur.

The DAE officials in the Jashore region said, a target was set by the government to cultivate mustard on 54,090 hectares of land but the farmers have cultivated the crop on 72,925 hectares of land exceeding the target.

"It has been possible for the mustard cultivators to bring additional 18,835 hectares of land under the cultivation against the target as the government has undertaken different farmers-friendly programs including providing agricultural incentives to the mustard growers," Additional Director of the DAE Jashore region Mohammad Aminul Islam told BSS.

The DAE sources said the farmers have cultivated mustard on 24,848 hectares of land in Jashore, 11,112 hectares of land in Jhenidah, 16,355 hectares of land in Magura, 11,645 hectares of land in Kushtia, 3,135 hectares of land in Chuadanga and 5,830 hectares of land in Meherpur districts.

Being inspired by motivational activities being conducted by the DAE, the farmers have by and large cultivated high-yielding varieties of mustard like Tori-7, Tori-14, BARI-14, BARI-17 and BARI-18 on more land across the region to get high yields.

The farmers have shown their keen interest to cultivate mustard on more farmlands due to the pragmatic farmers-friendly programs of the government, he added.
