Panchagarh shivers as cold spell continues

Shivering cold accompanied with dense fog and cold wave has hit Panchagarh district hard, disrupting normal life.

The bone-chilling cold is forcing people to stay home. The daily wage earners are the worst sufferer as they could not go out for work.

Some people were seen warming themselves in the morning after setting fire on husks beside the road.

Temperature was recorded at 6.8 degrees Celsius in Panchagarh on Thursday morning.

Russell Shah, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tetulia Meteorological Observatory, said Panchagarh’s Tetulia recorded lowest temperature at 6.8 degrees Celsius at 9am.

The roads continue to be covered in fog all day, and people can only see the sun for a moment in the afternoon. The temperature starts to drop as evening falls.

The thick fog causes people on the roads to get wet, so they burn straws to keep themselves warm. The poor are unable to get out of their houses for work.

Deputy Commissioner Md Jahurul Islam said about 50,000 blankets have been distributed among the cold-hit people in the district.
