Veteran Awami League (AL) leader and heroic freedom fighter (FF) Advocate Elias Ahmed died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment at 4 am Sunday. He was 72.
He is survived by two sons, host of relatives, admirers and fellow heroic freedom fighters, leaders and workers of Awami League and its associate bodies and well-wishers.
The news of his death cast a pall of gloom in the political, socio-cultural and professional and every arena of the Rangpur district and the greater Rangpur region as a whole.
Party and family sources said the first Namaz-E-Janaza of Advocate Elias Ahmed was held at Rangpur Judge Court premises at 11:30 am Sunday.
The second Namaj-E-Janaza was held at Rangpur District Awami League office premises in Betpotti area of the city at 12:30 pm.
A smart contingent of police forces gave a guard of honour and bugle play the last post before his last Namaz-E-Janaza at Koilash Ranjan Shalbon Mistripara Eidgah ground after the Johr prayers.
Later, his body was buried at the nearby Shalbon Mistripara Graveyard with full state honour.
Advocate Elias Ahmed got involved in the politics of the Bangladesh Chhatra League during his student life in 1967. He was elected as the Vice-president of Rangpur College Students' Union during the mass upsurge.
