The mango orchards of Meherpur started sprouting before the season due to favourable weather conditions in the area.
Most of the mango orchards in the district, including the historical Mujibnagar Amrakanan, are full of flower buds. The busyness of mango farmers has increased accordingly.
Orchard owners are currently busy tending to the trees including spraying insecticides.
According to experts, by the end of the Bengali month of Magh (February 13), every tree in the district will be fully sprouting.
The district office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said Meherpur's mangoes are famous all over the world in terms of taste. Because the mangoes of Meherpur are delicious, the demand for mangoes in this district has spread beyond all the districts of the country and its fame has spread to the continent of Europe. As the demand increases, so does the number of mango orchards.
All varieties of mangoes are being cultivated on a commercial basis in the district. Because of the quality of the soil here, Himsagar, Lengra, Bombay, and Tili Bombay mangoes are mostly cultivated in the area.
Especially, there are more plantations of common varieties like Langra, Gopalbhog, Khirsapati, Ashwina, but many people are becoming interested in cultivating hybrid Bari-3, Bari-4 varieties.
Mango farmer Mukul Biswas of Govipur village of Sadar upazila said that despite the severity of winter, many mango trees are budding early this time. If the weather remains favourable, the yield will be good too.
Meherpur district DAE Deputy Director Shankar Kumar Majumdar said mango trees sprout in three stages depending on the weather.
“There are mango orchards on 3,000 hectares of land in the district. We expect a bumper harvest if the weather remains favourable,” he said adding that if properly tended to, mango farming is a profitable venture.
