A trial tribunal on Monday convicted a youth and sentenced him to jail for three years for his involvement in cyber crimes in Naogaon district.
The convict, identified as Aminul islam, 26, of Khagra Jelapara village under Naogaon Sadar was also fined Tk one lakh. He will have to remain behind the bar for another six months if he fails to pay the fine.
Judge of Rajshahi Divisional Cyber Tribunal Ziaur Rahman found the convict guilty of the charge and pronounced the verdict in his presence in the court.
Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Advocate Ismat Ara told the journalists that Amirul had opened a whatsapp account in the name of the then Inspector General of Police along with using his photo in 2021.
He had been cheating the people using the fake whatsapp account randomly for a long time.
Naogaon Sadar Police arrested Amirul on August 21, 2021 and found the account in his Smartphone.
Subsequently, police lodged a case under the Digital Security Act against him.
After examining the recorded depositions of the prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidence the tribunal handed down the verdict.
