Two people were killed and 34 others were injured on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Barashur area under the Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj district Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Bidyut Biswas, 55, son of Gokul Chandra Biswas, resident of Bakri village, managing committee member of Bakri Bahumukhi Secondary School of Bagherpara upazila in Jashore district and Sudipta Biswas, 30, lab assistant of the school.
Officer-in-charge- (OC) of Bhatiapara Highway Police Station, said that on Thursday morning, the students, teachers, school management committee members and staff went for a picnic at the mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara, Gopalganj by 3 buses.
After visiting various places in Gopalganj, on their way back in the night, one of the buses overturned and hit a roadside tree while trying to overtake another bus in the area around 8pm, leaving 36 people seriously injured, the OC said.
Later, the injured were taken to Kashiani 100-bed Hospital where Bidyut Biswas succumbed to his injuries.
A total of 20 seriously injured people were sent to Jashore Hospital for better treatment and Sudipta Biswas died while undergoing treatment there, the OC said.
