Indian onion price drops Tk5 per kg in Hili

The prices of onions have gone down in Hili, Dinajpur by Tk 5 per kg in the span of a week due to increased import.

Last Friday, the kitchen essential was sold at Tk 25 per kg in the port markets, but since yesterday it was being sold at Tk 20 per kg. With the import, the price of locally produced onions has started dropping in the markets in the district.

While talking to The Business Post correspondent, the traders at the land Port said the prices are expected to go down further in import increases.

A buyer at the port’s market, Md Sobhan Miah, expressed relief at the reduction in onion prices. He added that low and mid-income people will benefit further if the prices of other commodities went down.

Ferdous Rahman, a wholesale onion trader of the Hili port market, said the price of all varieties of onions depends on imports from India. “We are buying onion from the port at the rate of Tk17-18 per kg and selling it for Tk 19 per kg.”

A retail onion seller of the market, Taher Ali said, “Last week Indian onions were sold for Tk 25 but now we are selling it for Tk 20 per kg. Domestic onions are selling for Tk 25 per kg.”

According to Sohrab Hossain Pratab Mallik, public relations officer of Panama Hili Land Port, about 220 metric tonnes of onions were imported in 11 Indian trucks through Hili port on Thursday. He added that import will continue regularly.
