Voluntary organisations Shishuder Jonno Foundation and Juboder Jonno Foundation have taken the initiative to sell books at Tk 10 in Tangail.

More than 400 students were able to buy various fictional and non-fictional books for Tk 10 at Nirala intersection Shaheed Minar Chattar of the city Monday morning.

Organisers said that this initiative is to encourage the youths to read books. Books of famous authors like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay have been sold for just Tk 10.

Other than Rabindranath Tagore's Shesher Kabita, Dui Bon, Sejuti, Chaturanga, Malancha; Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas, Chandranath; Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's Kapalkundala, Jibanananda Das’ Ruposhi Bangla; Jahanara Imam's Jibon Mrityu, Al Mahmud's Prempatra Pallabe, other novels, poems, non-fictional books, and books on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Liberation War were also sold during this event.

Maryam Akhtar, a student who was excited to buy her favourite book, said that she was able to buy a book worth Tk 100 taka for only Tk 10. “Such an arrangement is really appreciable,” she said.

Ahnaf Tasin, another student, said, “I cannot buy recreational books often as they are expensive. I never thought I would get such a good book at such a low price.”

Mueed Hasan Tarit, the founder of the Tk 10 book programme, said, "Students' footfall in the city's library has decreased. They are now addicted to the internet. This is our initiative to inspire students to read books.”

“I have brought more than 150 books worth about Tk 9,000 at my own expense. We are selling books of Tk 100-120 at a nominal price of only Tk 10. Our initiative will be worthwhile if students become more interested in reading books,” he added.

Mueed further said, “This initiative will continue in the future with a greater number of books. It will be easier if we get donations from the wealthy,” adding that they plan to organise the event once a month.
