Five killed in road crashes

At least five people were killed and over 20 others injured in separate road accidents in Natore, Sunamganj and Meherpur districts on Tuesday.

In Natore, one person was killed and at least 20 injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses in Baraigram upazila around Tuesday noon.

The deceased was identified as Bhuli Akand, 64. The injured were rescued by highway police and fire service personnel and sent to different hospitals.

Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bonpara Highway police station, said that two buses have been impounded and the treatment of the injured is being monitored all the time.

In Sunamganj, two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Sunamganj-Sylhet highway in Haluargaon area of Sadar upazila. The deceased were identified as Nasir Alam, 28, resident of Chattogram and Hadiul Islam Kamali, 24, resident of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district.

The accident occurred when a Sylhet-bound truck collided head-on with a Sunamganj-bound CNG-run auto rickshaw in the area around 8am, leaving two passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot and two others injured, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station Ikhtiyar Uddin Chowdhury said.

The injured were taken to Sunamganj 250-bed District Sadar Hospital while one was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment, he said.

The driver of the truck has been arrested, the OC added.

In Meherpur, two people were killed as a motorcycle hit a roadside tree in Mujibnagar upazila of the district yesterday morning, confirmed the Additional Police Super Ajmol Hossain.

The deceased were identified as Bijon, 22, and Rahidul Islam, 30, an Ansar member. Both were residents of Dariapur village in Mujibnagar Upazila.

Local people said the accident occurred when their bike lost control over the steering and hit a roadside tree at Chakshyamnagar village on Meherpur-Mujibnagar Road, leaving Bijon and Rahidul died on the spot.

A case is being processed to file.
