5 killed in road crashes

At least five people were killed and two others injured in separate road accidents in Bhola, Dinajpur and Cox’s Bazar districts on Friday.

In Bhola, three people, including two female college students, were killed and another was injured in a collision between a passenger bus and a battery-run auto-rickshaw on the Bhola-Charfashion highway under Daulatkhan upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rima Akhter, 17, daughter of Kaisar Matabbar, Shikha, 17, daughter of Jahangir, residents of Joynagar union of Daulatkhan upazila and Abul Kalam, 55.

Rima Akhter and Shikha were 12th-grader students at Halima Khatun Mahila College.

The accident occurred when a Bhola-bound passenger bus from Charfashion collided head-on with a battery-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction in the area around 9am, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and the driver of the auto-rickshaw injured, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Ripon Chandra Sarkar said.

Later, police recovered the bodies from the spot. The injured was taken to Bhola Sadar Hospital, he said.

In Dinajpur, a 50-year-old biker was killed after police said a speeding truck ran over him in the Dosh Mile area Friday.

The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain from the Bangibechaghat area of Dinajpur Sadar upazila, Sub-Inspector Noni Gopal of Dinajpur Highway Police said.

“The accident occurred around 12:30pm as Anwar was on his way to a wedding. He fell on the road after being hit by a battery-run rickshaw,” he added. “Anwar died at the scene when the truck ran over him.”

In Cox’s Bazar, a woman named Rozina Akhter, 30, died in a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a bus in Maheshkhali. A child of the deceased woman was also injured in the incident.

The police recovered the body after being informed. Confirming the incident, sources from Maheshkhali Police Station said that the body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital Morgue for post-mortem. The bus was seized but the driver fled the scene.
