Eid shoppers are flocking to different shopping malls in Khulna city eleven days ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims.

Local sources said the buyers are starting to crowd into the city markets in the district to buy new clothes, shoes, cosmetics and other items for their families in a festive mood.

All the city markets are busy selling their Eid items as customers rush to different shopping centres, which begin in the morning and continue till night.

While visiting various city shopping complexes including the Nixon Market, Khwaza Khanjahan Ali Market, Clay Road, Boro Bazar, Sonadanga shopping centre and KDA New Market, this correspondent found a crowd of buyers on Monday.

Most of the sales clerks said that the sales have started to reach their peak after Ramadan 13 compared to the last two years. Shoppers said that the prices of all clothes increased by 10 to 15 per cent compared to last year.

“This year the sales after 13th Ramadan have increased up to Tk one lakh from Tk 20,000-25,000 per day,” said Abul Hasan, owner of Bismillah Enterprise of the Khulna Shopping Complex.

This year a new collection of three pieces namely ‘Nayra’ is the top choice of young ladies.

Md Shafiqul Islam, owner of Nitu Cloth Store of the Esha Chamber Market said that this year Mahi, Organza, Ramsha, Manadakini, Bin Hameed, Rang Pasand, Mahajal, and Amber popular Indian three pieces are prime demands of the young women. These dresses are selling from Tk 1,300 to 7,000.

Most of the female customers are purchasing Soft Benaroshi Katan saree of Tk 5,500 to 6,500, Indian Jamdani of Tk 3,200 to 4,500, South Indian Kanjivaran from Tk 2,200 to 3,500, Rajasthani Jaypuri Silk from Tk 2,500 to 4,500, Monipuri Sharee of Sylhet from Tk 2,000 to 2,200, Gadwal Silk Saree from Tk 12,000 to 13000, said Amolesh Mallik, owner of Adritya Bosraloy of Jalil Tower Shopping Mall.

DOF, DAPIC & TOMMY Jeans from Tk 950 to 3,200 are the best choice of young men in the city, said Md Yasin Molla, owner of U Look of the same shopping mall.

Besides, Sheikh Shadi, Star and Top Ten, brand items Punjabi, are selling from Tk 600 to 2,500, said the owner of Punjabi Ghor, Railway Market in the city.

Shoppers said that prices of different clothes are increased by 15 to 20 per cent compared to last year.

According to the importers and wholesalers, Indian and Chinese products – which are traditionally dominating Bangladesh’s Eid market into backward point due to the heavy onrush of Taiwan and Thailand-made readymade garments, three pieces for young women, shoes, cosmetics, kid’s items and other fashion commodities this year.

The three-piece called-Naira is now being preferred by young women. Apart from this, Pakistani Tawakkal brand’s three pieces are on the list of choice for young women. Cotton gowns, Delhi boutiques are also doing well.

Meanwhile, a large number of makeshift shops have sprung up on the pavements of the city on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Prices of different varieties of clothes, particularly cotton, tissue, silk and synthetic have registered a sharp rise although the shops are almost full of a variety of garments.
