Six killed in road accidents

At least six people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Jashore on Tuesday.

In Rangpur, the driver of a battery-operated van-cart and its one passenger were killed and a woman was injured in a road accident at Jamtala point on Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Pirganj upazila.

The deceased were identified as van-cart driver Md Mokhlesur Rahman, 50, of village Mohodipur and its passenger Md Rezaul Islam, 16, of village Kishorgari in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district.

The accident took place when a passenger bus and the van-cart collided head-on there injuring three persons on board the van-cart at noon, said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rangpur Highway Circle Zahidur Rahman Chowdhury.

In Jashore, two truck helpers were killed in a road accident on Jashore-Khulna highway in Basundia-Baniargati area under Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as truck helpers Shihab Hasan Khan, 20, son of Alamgir Hasan Khan, resident of Culkathi village in Sadar upazila of Bagerhat district and Afzal Hossain Gazi, 23, son of Akbar Ali Gazi, resident of Lakshmidari village of Satkhira Sadar upazila.

The accident occurred in the area when a Khulna-bound sand-laden truck hit from behind another maize-laden truck around 3.30am, leaving a truck helper dead on the spot and another injured, OC of Kotwali Police Station Md Tajul Islam said.

The injured truck helper was taken to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the OC said.

The bodies were sent to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

In Dinajpur, a student was killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a bicycle on the Dinajpur-Rangpur highway in front of Ranibandar College Mor Baza area under Chirirbandar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Prashant Roy, 15, son of Shyamal Roy, resident of Kshenpara of Alokdihi Union of the upazila. He was a 10th-grade student at Alokdihi JB High School in the area.

In another accident, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider suffered injuries after their motorcycle was hit by a bus in front of Nawabganj Upazila Parishad, Jahidul Islam, SI of Nawabganj Police Station confirmed.

The deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain, 19, son of Rangpur’s Mizanur Rahman and a student of Gopalpur Technical College.
