A village doctor was killed while trying to save his paddy field as a herd of wild elephants attacked him near the Haluaghat border area in Mymensingh on Tuesday night, said police.
Deceased Idris Ali, 50, is from Barak village in Haluaghat upazila. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm on Tuesday. Gazirvita UP chairman Md Abdul Mannan confirmed the incident.
He said, some 30-35 wild elephants have been coming down for some time in search of food in the croplands of the Gabrakhali border area.
Police and local people said there was a herd of 35-40 elephants in the hilly forests near the bordering Gazirbhita union parishad in the evening. The elephants enter the paddy field in Barak village around 9:30 pm.
People dispersed the elephant herd at the time.
Idris Mia was crushed to death by an elephant when local people tried to chase away the elephants to protect the paddy field.
Confirming the incident, Haluaghat police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinuzzaman Khan said one was killed after being attacked by a wild elephant.
