Record Boro harvested in coastal areas of Barguna
Boro rice has been cultivated on about 3,000 hectares of land in coastal area of Barguna Sadar-Al Mamun

Coastal area farmers in Barguna cultivated Boro paddy for the first time this year and got a bumper production.

Around 200 bighas of land in Chargachia village of Burirchar union in the district has been brought under Boro cultivation for the first time, said officials.

This year, BRRI Dhan 67, 74, 89, 92, 99 and Bangabandhu Dhan 100 have been cultivated in the field at the initiative of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI)'s Irrigation and Water Management Division under Upokulio Shassa Nibirikoron Programme and a bumper production of Boro was obtained in the sample crop harvesting.

According to the information of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE, Boro rice has been cultivated on about 3,000 hectares of land in Barguna Sadar.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Director General Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir inaugurated Nomuna Shassa Kartan programme on Wednesday afternoon in Chargachia of Burirchar where among others Head of Irrigation and Water Management Division of BRRI Md Moniruzzaman, Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Barishal Shawkat Osman and BRRI Barishal Regional Office Kazi Shirin Akhtar Jahan were present.

Shahjahan Kabir said there has been bumper production of Boro paddy in the coastal zone. The farmers have got 36 maund rice from a bigha of land this year.

He said,” This year we have cultivated 5-6 potential varieties. The farmers are very happy over the production.”

They will cultivate more paddies in the coming days, he added.

It should be noted that about 25 per cent of the country's area is in the coastal zone. Most of the land in Barguna, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Patuakhali and Barishal districts remains unused during the dry season.

A programme called -Coastal Crop Intensification- is being implemented under the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute to increase productivity by utilizing irrigation facilities and bringing fallow land under cultivation, Shahjahan Kabir also said.
