Cox’s Bazar district administration has taken extensive preparations to deal with possible disasters caused by the cyclonic storm Mocha that may hit next week.
About 576 shelters have been prepared in Cox’s Bazar which has a capacity of 5,05,990 people. Apart from this, there is a reserve of Tk 10.3 lakh, 490 tonnes of rice, and 194 bundles of iron sheets for providing humanitarian assistance in case of possible disaster.
Along with this, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allocated Tk 10 lakh cash, 50 tonnes of rice, and seven tonnes of dry food for Cox’s Bazar district. An emergency control room has been opened at the initiative of the district administration to deal with possible disasters.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Shahin Imran said all preparations have been taken considering the possible damage before the cyclone starts.
Allocation of shelter-based volunteers, identification of high-risk and low-risk areas, stocking adequate dry food, bringing vulnerable people to nearby shelters, and saving livestock are very important and challenging issues in disaster response.
The DC also said that all the officers and employees working in different departments should not leave their workplaces on government holidays at the time of disaster.
Till noon Thursday, the areas of Cox’s Bazar have not been affected by the cyclone.
Mohammad Osman, the supervisor of Sea Safe Life Guard, who works to protect tourists at Cox’s Bazar beach, said that it is currently safe to swim at Cox’s Bazar beach. If there is any instruction from the district administration, action will be taken accordingly.
Bhola prepares for cyclone Mocha
A total of 746 shelters have been kept ready in the district to deal with the cyclone ‘Mocha’. There will be 18,600 volunteers in the field and 98 medical teams have been formed. Eight control rooms are being opened in seven upazilas of the district.
A total of 13,600 CPP volunteers and 5,000 Red Crescent Society workers are on the ground. Fishermen are being asked to return safely. Already 90 per cent of the fishermen have returned to the ghat. Besides, about 90 per cent of the field has been harvested and the rest will be harvested by tomorrow.
