The 47th historic Farakka Long March Day of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was observed at Santosh in Tangail on Tuesday.

After offering the wreath, prayers were held at the Mazar of the leader.

At that time, Hasrat Khan Bhasani, president of NAP Bhasani and Khoda-i-Khedmatgar and convener of Pir Shahzaman Bazar Committee, member-secretary of Bhasani Parishad Central Committee Azad Khan Bhasani, freedom fighter Siddique Hossain, president of Bangladesh Inter-University Officers Federation and president Md Mofizul Islam Majnu, president of MBSTU Bhasani Parishad Md Epier Hossain and executive president Md Kamruzzaman Khan were present, among others.

On May 16, 1976, mass leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani led a massive long march from Rajshahi towards India’s Farakka Barrage, demanding its demolition.

The Indian government erected the dam to divert the flow of water from the River Ganges into its territory.

Thousands of people participated in the march and staged a demonstration protesting the construction of an embankment raised across the Ganges in the Indian state of West Bengal, some 16.5 kilometres off the Chapainawabganj border.
