DAE predicts bumper summer vegetables yield in Narsingdi

About 65,500 tonnes of summer vegetables are expected to be produced in Narsingdi district during the current season due to favourable weather conditions.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Narsingdi Mohammad Azizur Rahman said if the favourable climate condition prevails in a couple of weeks the above-mentioned production would be achieved.

He said some 68,200 hectares of land have been brought under summer vegetable cultivation in six upazilas of the district in the current season.

Officials of the DAE encouraged the farmers to cultivate toxin-free vegetables avoiding chemical fertilisers and using organic fertilisers.

Now the farmers are cultivating poison-free vegetables in the district. This year farmers have cultivated poison-free vegetables over 1,500 hectares of land in the district.

Different kinds of summer vegetables like okra, spiny gourd, cucumber, pointed gourd, yardlong bean, pumpkin, brinjal, sponge gourd, bitter melon, spinach, stem spinach, and arum grow aplenty in Shibpur, Belabo, Raipura and Sadar upazilas of the district.

Narsingdi district, a vegetable surplus area, usually supplies 30 to 40 per cent of its total production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demands. A number of poor families in different upazilas of the district achieved economic self-reliance through vegetable farming during the last couple of years.
