The Boro paddy and rice procurement drive began in Manikganj on Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Manikganj Muhammad Abdul Latif formally inaugurated the programme at Beutha Food Godown in the town.
District Controller of Food Mahmuda Akter Mousumi, Upazila Controller of Food Md. Shariful Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Food Godown Bikash Chandra Debnath, a large number of farmers and government officials were present on the occasion.
DC Muhammad Abdul Latif said to ensure the fair price of paddy and rice, the government has decided to procure rice from the producers avoiding any middleman.
He also urged the farmers to sell their paddy and rice to the government through the local authorities.
The government is buying per kg paddy at a cost of Tk 30 and per kg rice at a cost of Tk 44 from the farmers directly.
The government has set a target of buying 528 tonnes of paddy and 440 tonnes of clean rice from the district during the current season, the sources said.
