Khulna wears a festive look as city polls nearing

With only one week left to be held KCC polls, Khulna has turned into a city of festivity with posters, symbols and pana in the sky while activists are chanting slogans around the city seeking votes for their respective mayoral and councillor candidates.

Posters and banners of the aspirants have covered the roads and highways in the city.

A festive mood centring the election has gripped this crowded industrial city with slogan-chanting marchers and the electorate putting major challenges to the new city father when they assume the charge of mayor.

The campaign will end on June 10 and the polls to the KCC is slated for June 12. Different political parties, including the ruling Bangladesh Awami League along with the opposition Jatiya Party are participating in the election of the KCC.

Contestants of the ruling and opposition parties for the mayor post have been the top topic everywhere and the aspirants are also making pledges to woo the voters in favour of their respective symbols--- the Boat, Plough, Hand Fan, Rose and Table Watch.

The ruling party fielded Talukder Abdul Khaleque while Jatiya Party nominated Shafiqul Islam Modhu, Moulana Abdul Awal from Bangladesh Islami Andolon, S M Sabbir Hossain from Jaker Party and Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq as independent candidates for the KCC mayor.

While carrying out the campaign every day, Khaleque urged the voters to go to the polling booths and cast votes for the boat symbol, the electoral symbol of Awami League.

“With a target of building a livable smart city, I have worked last five years. I want to carry on my unfinished task,” he said while talking to BSS on Saturday.

He pledged to address water logging, drug peddling, traffic congestion and a women-friendly digital smart city.

“Awami League has carried out massive development activities across the country.

This town also gets the touch of development. Please cast a vote for me to continue the development,” he said.

The other mayoral candidates also pledged for building a modern and livable city if they are elected.
